Robbins, Wilt, Stevenson and Gruitza Announce $676,151 in Mercer County Grants

Harrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) and area legislators today announced the awarding of $671,151 in state grants to support projects in Mercer County.

Joining Senator Robbins in announcing the funds are Rep. Rod Wilt (R-17), Rep. Dick Stevenson (R-8) and Rep. Mike Gruitza (D-7).

"It's important that legislators work together to ensure that tax dollars return to Mercer County from the state," said Robbins. "These three grants will support projects that benefit taxpayers across the county."

The legislators announced the following grants:

  • $530,651 to Community Action of Mercer County to fund weatherization assistance efforts. The Weatherization Assistance Program is aimed at minimizing the adverse effects of high energy costs for low-income residents.
Without weatherization, such costs can result in the loss of home heating service. The program prioritizes residents at higher risk, such as the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and families with young children.

"With the harsh weather we have been experiencing this winter, proper weatherization of homes is critical, especially when senior citizens and children are at risk," said Wilt.

  • $85,500 to the Mercer County Regional Planning Commission for land use planning. The funds will be used to support the integrated Mercer County and multi-municipal comprehensive plan.

"Regional planning increases efficiencies and saves tax dollars, and this grant will help the Mercer County Regional Planning Commission develop a comprehensive, integrated plan for the region," said Stevenson.

  • $60,000 to the Mercer County Regional Council of Governments to help pay for the Shenango Valley Regional Lock-Up and implementation of the county-wide Video Arraignment and Computerized Booking System.

"The regional lock-up, along with video arraignment and computerized book, help cut the cost of administering justice so that more resources can be used for law enforcement," said Gruitza.

The grants were awarded by the state Department of Community and Economic Development.
