Recycling Grant Announced by Senator Robbins,
Representative Gruitza, Representative Wilt, Representative Stevenson
Harrisburg – Mercer County's state legislators today announced the
awarding of a $507,517 state grant to aid recycling efforts in the
county.
The Mercer County Solid Waste Authority was awarded the funds
through the Recycling Development and Implementation Grant program,
according to Sen. Bob Robbins (R-50), Rep. Mike Gruitza (D-7), Rep.
Rod Wilt (R-17) and Rep. Dick Stevenson (R-8). The grant will be used
to purchase curbside containers and drop-off containers, and construct
a compost building, the lawmakers said.
"Whether by helping counties improve their composting programs or
assisting them in the purchase of containers for recyclables, the
Commonwealth plays a major role in assisting communities in their
recycling efforts," said Robbins. "It's important that the state
supply financial support to help Mercer County meet state rules aimed
at reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills."
The Recycling Performance Grant Program is administered by the
state Department of Environmental Protection. The program provides
incentives to help communities increase their recycling rates and
exceed the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal
waste.
