Senate Adopts Robbins' "Slovak Heritage Week"
Resolution
Harrisburg – The State Senate today unanimously approved Senate
Resolution 284, sponsored by Senator Bob Robbins (R-50), which
recognizes July 12th through 18th as "Slovak Heritage Week" in
Pennsylvania.
"More than half of the Slovak immigrants in the early 1900's
settled within this Commonwealth with the majority locating within
western Pennsylvania," Sen. Robbins said. "Specifically within the
50th Senatorial District, Slovakian-born Stefan Banic obtained the
first patent on a parachute. He donated the patent to the United
States Government in exchange for an honorary membership in the Army
Air Corps during World War I. Because of his achievements, I have been
honored to share in the display of Slovak heritage through the
founding of the Stefan Banic Skydiving Festival."
Now in its 13th year, the Banic event features the annual
Pennsylvania State Parachuting Championships, airplane rides,
parachuting demonstrations, tandem skydiving, Slovak foods, crafts,
and displays, military displays, re-enactment groups, as well plenty
of activities for children. This year's event will be held July 17-18,
at the airport in Greenville. For more information, please call
