Grant Awarded for Family Savings Account Program in
Mercer County
Harrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) today announced that
Community Homebuyers Inc. of Mercer County will be receiving a $54,750
state grant to promote family savings accounts and home ownership
among low-income Mercer County residents.
The Pennsylvania Family Savings Account Program, administered by
the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development,
provides funding to such non-profit agencies. Low-income individuals
and families can apply to these agencies, which in turn, provide
matching funds to savings accounts held by the participants. The funds
can be used to purchase a home, pay for education, start up or expand
a business, and other approved purposes. Agencies receiving grants
must also provide participants with technical assistance, such as
financial management training.
"This grant is part of a program to encourage self-sufficiency,
responsibility and independence," said Robbins. "The truth is, this
program provides a real incentive for individuals to begin planning
and saving for their short-term needs and long-term goals."
