Robbins: Grants will Aid Mercer County Watershed
Improvement, Recycling
Harrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) today announced the
awarding of two state grants to hire a watershed specialist in Mercer
County and to pay for recycling.
Robbins said a $42,000 grant is being awarded to the Mercer County
Conservation District to hire a watershed specialist to provide
technical assistance. The watershed specialist will oversee watershed
assessment, procurement of funding and the creation of work plans to
restore and protect groundwater and surface water in Mercer County.
"This grant will allow the Mercer County Conservation District to
employ a trained professional to help improve the quality and quantity
of the county's water supply," said Robbins. "The availability of
clean, safe water is important for thriving communities, economic
development and recreation."
Robbins said a $42,000 Recycling Performance Grant is being awarded
to the Mercer County Solid Waste Authority to help pay for recycling
efforts in the county. The amount is based on the total tons recycled
in the county and its overall recycling rate for 2002.
The Recycling Performance Grant program provides incentives to
Pennsylvania communities to increase recycling rates and help exceed
the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste.
Both grants were awarded by the state Department of Environmental
Protection.
