Robbins To Host Government
Seminar For High School Students
Greenville - State government will come alive
for students in Pennsylvania's 50th Senatorial
District during a free seminar sponsored by State
Senator Bob Robbins (R-50).
Robbins will host "State Government: A Closer
Look" on Friday, October 22, 2004, at Thiel
College, Greenville, for high school students in
the 50th Senatorial District, which encompasses
all of Crawford and Mercer and parts of Butler and
Lawrence Counties.
"By providing the opportunity for interaction
between high school students, state legislators,
Senate staff, and lobbyists, students will be
exposed to various aspects of state government and
the legislative process," Robbins said. "Students
will have the chance to participate in a mock
session of the Senate of Pennsylvania by adopting
the role of a state Senator during this role-play
exercise."
Each high school in the 50th Senatorial
District has been invited to send up to five
students with an advisor to participate in this
educational seminar. Schools may register for the
free seminar until September 27th. Home-schooled
students are also welcome to participate.
During the morning, students will participate
in mock Senate committee meetings and discuss
legislation. The student-senators will have the
opportunity to amend the legislation and vote on
whether the bill should come before the full
Senate. During the afternoon, the student-senators
will vote on the legislation in a mock session of
the full Senate.
"Allowing the students to actively participate
with the lobbyists and other Senate staff means
they will develop a better understanding of how
the Senate of Pennsylvania works and the role they
can play in the legislative process," Robbins
said. "It is important for our students to
recognize how their current and future
participation in government will shape the
development of public policy in Pennsylvania in
the years to come."
