Pymatuning Learning Center Compromise Reached, Lawmakers Announce

HARRISBURG – Rep. John Evans (R-Erie/Crawford), Rep. Rod Wilt (R-Crawford/Mercer) and Sen. Bob Robbins (R-50) announced today that the Pymatuning Wildlife Learning Center will stay open on a limited basis throughout the summer in an agreement reached with the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

"The agreement that we have worked out with the Game Commission to keep the center open on a limited basis this summer is vital for tourism in Crawford County," said Evans. "It would have been devastating to our area if the learning center would have closed, and I am pleased that we were able to work hand-in-hand with the Game Commission to reach this compromise."

The Game Commission's Pymatuning Learning Center features learning-based exhibits and offers special programs and activities to make a visitor's experience more informative and entertaining. It also houses a "Hunting Heritage Room," which depicts the critical role that hunting and trapping have played and will play in Pennsylvania's past, present and future. The Game Commission and its Wildlife Learning Center are supported by hunting and furtaking license revenue and do not receive any state tax dollars.

"This is such a unique resource that we have. It attracts visitors from throughout Pennsylvania and other states," Wilt said. "Also, it provides a wonderful educational tool for students interested in studying nature, the environment and the role in hunting and trapping."

"I would like to thank David Ray, president of the Linesville Chamber, for bringing his concerns of the impending closing to the attention of the legislative delegation," said Robbins.  "This decision by the Game Commission to keep the Wildlife Center open on a limited basis is the result of legislators, local officials and the Game Commission working together."

Further details will be forthcoming when plans are developed. The center is located along Hartstown Road south of Linesville.
