Robbins to Join Send-Off for Largest PA Guard Deployment Since Korean War

Harrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) will travel to Camp Shelby, Mississippi to be on hand Thursday for the largest deployment of the Pennsylvania National Guard since the Korean War.

Robbins said the guard members are part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team heading to Iraq. The 2nd Brigade is made up of approximately 4,000 soldiers from 23 states, including 2,100 troops from the 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

When they arrive in Iraq, Pennsylvania's total number of guard members on the ground will reach 3,200 -- the largest contribution of National Guard troops in the nation, said Robbins.

"This deployment is historic in its size, and displays a level of dedication and sacrifice on the part of the Pennsylvania National Guard that is unmatched in America," said Robbins, who served two tours of duty with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. "The large number of Pennsylvanians serving in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team means that every area of the Commonwealth will be represented in this deployment. Our prayers will be with all of these brave men and women, and their families."

Their mission in Iraq will include: patrol, cordon and search, convoy escort, force protection, training Iraqi civil defense forces, stability and support operations and humanitarian operations, said Robbins.

"It is important that Americans remember that servicemen and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are risking their lives to spread democracy and defeat terrorism," said Robbins. "That's why I'm going to Camp Shelby to join in sending off the troops. I want to spread the word that thousands of Pennsylvania National Guard members -- and their families -- continue to make great sacrifices in this conflict and thank them and their families for their service to our country."
