Robbins Secures $206,000 to Replace Fredonia Water Tank

Improved water service, fire protection for Fredonia Borough, Fairview and Delaware townships

Harrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) today announced that Fredonia Borough is now eligible to receive $206,000 in state funds that he was able to secure in the 2005-06 State Budget to replace the borough's aging water tank.

The tank has a capacity of 65,000 gallons, only slightly more than the borough's daily water usage. A larger tank is needed to ensure enough water for fire protection in the borough, as well as Fairview and Delaware townships, Robbins said.

"I am pleased that I was able to use my position in Senate leadership to have funds earmarked for this important project," Robbins said. "A reliable supply of safe drinking water is vital for public heath and fire protection. Fredonia can now move ahead with work that will improve water service to the community, and make more water available for fire protection in borough as well as in Delaware and Fairview Townships."

A 1998 inspection of the existing tank found that the 60-foot structure is corroding, with the bottom of the reservoir covered with sediment. Homes nearby the tank lose water pressure when the water level drops 15 feet.

The new tank would hold between 100,000 to 120,000 gallons, Robbins said. The total project cost is estimated at $470,000. The borough plans to use $264,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds to cover the balance of the costs. The state funds will be available through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Safe Water Program.
