Robbins: Senate Passes Measure to Expand Emergency Responders Death Benefits Act

HARRISBURG -- The Pennsylvania Senate passed legislation on Wednesday that would expand and increase family death benefits for emergency responders, according to Senator Bob Robbins (R-50), who voted in favor of the measure.

House Bill 875 would increase family death benefits covered under the Emergency Responders Death Benefits Act from $50,000 to $100,000. It would also expand the law to cover death benefits for responders who die of a heart attack or stroke that occurs within 24 hours of a physical training exercise or emergency response.

"Pennsylvania's emergency responders dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe every time they answer the call," said Robbins. "Their families make this sacrifice as well, and we need to ensure that these families receive the benefits they deserve should the unthinkable happen."

Robbins said the measure is part of a legislative package designed to improve homeland security.

The bill now goes to the Governor for his approval.
