FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Robbins: State Senate Votes to Restore Volunteer Firefighter/EMS FundingHarrisburg – Legislation to restore $25 million in state funding to support volunteer firefighters and ambulance services was approved by the Senate today, according to Senator Bob Robbins (R-50). Robbins said the action was necessary because the Pennsylvania Supreme Court struck down a provision in state law that provided $25 million annually to the Commonwealth's first responders -- the largest single source of state funds available to volunteer fire and ambulance companies. Senate Bill 867 restores this annual funding, ensuring that such volunteer organizations would have access to necessary equipment and facilities. "These volunteer first responders put their lives on the line to protect the lives and properties of others. Restoring this assistance is the least can we do in return," said Robbins. "Modern emergency equipment is expensive, and these funds will be put to use improving public safety in our communities." Robbins said the funding would be used for the construction or renovation of facilities, the purchase or repair of equipment, training personnel, or debts associated with capital projects. Senate Bill 867 is now before the State House for further consideration. CONTACT: Nate Silcox (717) 787-1322 |
