Robbins Cosponsors Measure to Reduce Size of Legislature

Harrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) is cosponsoring a Constitutional amendment that would decrease the size of the Pennsylvania General Assembly.  Senate Bill 890 would reduce the Senate from 50 to 30 members and the House from 203 to 121 members.

"Given the interest in reform initiatives, I believe it is time to consider whether to reduce the size of the legislature," said Robbins.  "At a minimum, public hearings should be held to air different perspectives and to let everyone understand the implications.  If there is determined to be substantial support for such a constitutional amendment, it appears that a Senate of 30 members and a House of 121 members would be practical.  No matter what, I believe that this is a conversation worth having."

The current size was determined more than a century ago as part of a populist reform movement.  "While this legislation is one way of helping to reform state government, the implications--such as its affect on rural areas--need to be thoroughly thought through," said Robbins.

Senate Bill 890 has been referred to the Senate State Government Committee.
