Announcing Extension of Armed Forces Loan
Forgiveness Program
PHEAA Continues Higher Education
Opportunities for Military & Creates New Program
for Nurses
Harrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50)
joined members of the Senate and House Veterans
Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committees today
to announce the extension of the Armed Forces Loan
Forgiveness Program by the Pennsylvania Higher
Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).
Originally established in 2003, the Armed Forces
Loan Forgiveness Program provides loan forgiveness
to Pennsylvania residents who served on active duty
at any time between September 11, 2001, and December
31, 2005. The program has been extended until June
30, 2006.
Since the program's inception, PHEAA has provided
more than $11 million in loan forgiveness to more
than 6,000 members of the armed forces across the
Commonwealth. The program provides up to $2,500 in
a one-time loan forgiveness payment for student loan
borrowers serving in the military.
As a part of its extension of the Armed Forces
Loan Forgiveness Program, PHEAA has established a
Veterans Homes Nursing Loan Forgiveness Program.
This program will provide for fifty percent
reimbursement, with a maximum of $10,000 loan
forgiveness, for recently graduated nurses that
agree to work for three years in one of
Pennsylvania's six veterans' homes.
Sen. Robbins stated, "I am pleased that PHEAA has
recognized the needs of our veterans homes and
worked with the General Assembly to establish this
program. Ultimately, this program sends another
strong message that Pennsylvania cares about our
veterans' -- as well as a commitment to nurses who
stay in Pennsylvania."
