FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Robbins Announces Funds to Help Fight Mercer County WildfiresHarrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) today announced the approval of state grants to help volunteer fire companies in Mercer County pay for new equipment and training to fight fires in forests and undeveloped areas. Robbins said the federally-funded grants are most useful for rural fire companies. "Fire companies in rural communities face special challenges, and among them is fighting fires in forests and other wooded areas," said Robbins. "This aid will help local fire companies purchase wildfire-suppression equipment and protective clothing." Robbins announced grants for the following volunteer fire companies: Clark Volunteer Fire Company, $1,240; Jackson Center Volunteer Fire Company, $4,148; West Salem Fire Department, $1,016; and Jamestown Volunteer Firemen's Association, $7,360. The grants are available to communities that have fewer than 10,000 residents and can supply matching funds for the projects. The funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
