HARRISBURG — State and local members of the National Federation of Independent Business will recognize five Butler and Mercer County state lawmakers for their outstanding support of small business during two local meetings on Friday, Sept. 29.

At 8 a.m., at Anderson Coach and Travel, 1 Anderson Plaza, Greenville, NFIB members will present Guardian of Small Business Awards to state Sen. Bob Robbins and state Rep. Rod Wilt.

At 1 p.m., at Natili's Restaurant and Lounge, 104 West Wayne Street, Butler, NFIB members will present Guardian of Small Business Awards to state Reps. Brian Ellis, Daryl Metcalfe and Dick Stevenson.

"NFIB Guardian of Small Business Awards only are presented to senators and representatives who voted favorably on key small-business issues at least 75 percent of the time during the current session," said NFIB State Director Kevin Shivers.

Shivers noted the votes tracked by NFIB this session included some of the highest priority issues in NFIB's small-business agenda.

"It's important to recognize lawmakers who support small business," Shivers said. "Nearly 98 percent of all Pennsylvania are small. Yet these businesses account for half of all jobs in the state. The record shows that when the roll was called, these five lawmakers were true and consistent advocates for small business."

NFIB's 2005-06 voting record includes only key votes on small-business issues, not all of the votes cast during the session.  The complete NFIB small-business voting record will be released shortly. Among the issues tracked this session, all five lawmakers cast affirmative votes for pro-small business legislation that would:

  • Make health insurance more affordable for small business (SB 854);
  • Reduce costly junk lawsuits (SB 435);
  • Protect the rights of private-property owners (SB 881 and HB 2054); and
  • Reduce the tax burden on small businesses and manufacturers (HB 515).

During the meetings, Shivers said NFIB also will review the impact on small business of recently enacted tax cuts, and discuss small-business legislation to be debated during the fall legislative session. He noted the meetings are sponsored by MyWireless.com

Local business owners who want to attend the meetings should call Gwenn Moyer at 717.232.8582 or email:gwenn.moyer@nfib.org.
