FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Senate Passes Robbins' Bill Allowing Firefighters and Police to Fundraise Along RoadsHarrisburg – Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Senate overwhelmingly passed legislation sponsored by Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) that would allow firefighters, law enforcement officers, and public safety organizations to fundraise along roadways. "Fire companies have held fundraisers, or 'boot drives,' along roads for many years," said Robbins. "However, it was only recently that it was brought to my attention that this is prohibited under the Vehicle Code. My legislation would reverse this policy by allowing firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other public safety organizations to fundraise along roads after receiving permission from the local municipality." Robbins stated, "While I would have liked to allow all charitable organizations to fundraise along highways, a public safety concern was expressed. In order to get something accomplished, I agreed to this compromise measure. It is my hope that we can come back and revisit this issue in the coming legislative session." Senate Bill 1330 now goes to the House for further consideration. CONTACT: Nate Silcox
