FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sen. Robbins Legislation Supports Fire Fighter "Boot Drive" EffortsSB 351 would permit charitable collections on roadwaysHarrisburg - State Senator Bob Robbins wants to give firefighters the ability to permit charitable collections on roadways. In fact, he today told the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association that he has introduced legislation to do just that. Senate Bill 351 would allow charitable organizations -- after getting local approval -- to fundraise on local roadways, for programs such those where fire fighters collect donations in a boot. "I would like to thank the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association for its work to help charitable and community organizations in their efforts to help improve the lives of so many people and in particular those with Muscular Dystrophy," Senator Robbins said. "I strongly support their efforts personally and as a legislator." Senator Robbins said he recognizes the importance of the roadway fundraising efforts. "Several of my local volunteer organizations -- including my local fire department -- have historically held fundraisers along roadways without incident," Senator Robbins said. "These types of fundraisers are often successful because they are highly visible to the community. Without such visibility, it is difficult to attract attention for such worthy causes. Ultimately, my legislation would make this issue a local matter." Senator Robbins originally introduced the proposal as Senate Bill 1330 of last session. Unfortunately, the bill received numerous amendments at the end of the session, including a number of new provisions relating to issues such as automated red light enforcement cameras and tort options for insurance policies. "That was what was received back in the Senate at the very end of the Session. The truth is, those complex and controversial amendments simply killed a good and worthwhile bill. This time, we are starting earlier in the Legislative Session," Senator Robbins said. "Senate Bill 351 is now before the Senate Transportation Committee and I am very hopeful that it will be reported out of that committee soon and quickly work its way through the process and on to the Governor's desk for his signature."
